Monster Week

If a hairy, scary monster
stomps into class on Monday,
would your teacher give him homework
that is due the very next day?

If a willful, skillful student
slips into class on Monday,
would your teacher turn a blind eye
when he takes your lunch at midday?

If that hairy, scary monster
upsets the class on Tuesday,

would your teacher keep him after?
Would she punish him for horseplay?

If that willful, skillful student
trips his classmates up on Tuesday,
would your teacher make excuses
Say his feet got in the wrong way?

If that hairy, scary monster
brings his homework in on Wednesday,
would your teacher stick a gold star
on his thoughtful, messy essay?

If that willful, skillful student
copies all your math on Wednesday,
would your teacher think you cheated,
even though it's only hearsay?

If that somewhat scary monster
cuts his hair and cleans his face,
would your teacher let him play ball?
Maybe catch at second base?

If that willful, skillful student
beats the monster up on Thursday,
would your teacher stop and send him
to the principal to pay?

If that not-so-scary monster
says on Friday he's named Fred,
would you let him be your best friend
no matter what your teacher said?

If that willful, skillful student
says on Friday that he's moving,
would you help him clean his desk out
and decide your school's improving?

If your monster week is over,
Skillful's gone and Fred's your friend,
what's the answer when you wonder
who's the monster in the end?
